VH1 Trailblazer Honors #MeToo’s Tarana Burke, Author Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, and #MeToo Founder, Tarana Burke, join Speaker Nancy Pelosi and filmmaker Ava DuVernay as VH1 Trailblazer Honors recipients. The event will air on March 8 for International Women’s Day.

Aside from being one of the cool authors who will randomly help students on Twitter understand their work, Margaret Atwood is a long-time advocate of women’s rights. She’s written over 50 books of fiction, poetry and critical essay. She continues to use her platform to aid victims of sexual assault and advocates for gender equality and human rights.

For more than 25 years, activist, advocate and fashion writer Tarana Burke has worked at the intersection of racial justice, arts, culture and sexual violence. In 2006 while working with students in the Black Belt, she started using ‘me too’ as a tool for healing, education and action. The ‘me too’ movement quickly expanded to include adult women and men, queer and trans folks and all marginalized groups. After years of building, October 2017 saw the movement become a global movement of empathy and impact.

The movement is now raising monies to build a global community, online and offline, to help guide survivors of sexual violence, according to Variety. She also told the trade, “In the first 24 hours of #MeToo going viral, just on Facebook there were 12 million engaged with the hashtag. If, in this country, we had an outbreak of some communicable disease that 12 million people got in a 24-hour time period, we would be focused solely on the cure. That’s the difference in how people think about the disease of sexual violence.”

This will also kick off Women’s History Month and include a performance of “Soul Survivor” by Rita Ora.
